I agree. I think your particular marriage is beneficial to the institution of marriage. The same for the countless other childless spouses I know (with perhaps one exception).

And I think that is expanded to successful same-sex marriages, too: having people who want to commit themselves to an institution tend to strengthen it.

That's part of what I don't really get: I've always thought that same-sex couples wanting to get married was a good thing for marriage in general.

Thanks for the comment, Mark.

I like to think that my childless heterosexual marriage (for 12 years so far) HELPS marriage as an institution by showing others that marriages can work and can be happy. There's an increasing amount of evidence that marriages don't work - based on the increasing divorce rate.

Even if I weren't married, I really don't see me producing fatherless children all over the place. Besides the fact that this would require one or more willing female participants :-) there's the fact that as a computer and project management professional I am way too prepared to let that happen. Add to that the fact that I recognize that it's a bad idea, and it pretty much isn't going to happen.

And that goes for my entire circle of friends. So far, in that group, I know of one abortion and zero single-parent children.
